FAQ

What problems do you solve for decision-makers at small and midsize businesses?

Many small and midsize businesses don’t have a dedicated IT leader, or theirs is too tied up in day-to-day operations to focus on strategy, while the pressure to digitize and adopt AI keeps growing. That’s the gap I fill: I work with you to set priorities and build a roadmap, evaluate software and vendors, lead projects, and build solutions myself, such as AI prototypes, internal tools or a data platform. You get leadership-level expertise without having to create a full-time position.

What problems do you solve for decision-makers at larger companies?

Larger companies rarely lack expertise. What they often lack is time, an independent perspective, or someone who can bridge business, IT and vendors. I provide second opinions and IT due diligence, support PMOs and programs, prepare decision papers for executive committees and manage vendors. From my time in Coop’s CIO Office, I know how committees, budget cycles and governance work inside a large enterprise.

What industries and types of companies do you work with?

Small and midsize businesses as well as large enterprises, across industries. My experience includes retail and wholesale, construction and real estate, consumer goods, logistics, and software and IT services. The challenges where business and IT meet are much the same in every industry, so I get up to speed quickly in new environments.

What does working with you as a fractional or interim CIO look like?

As a fractional CIO or fractional head of data & AI, I work with you a set number of days per month as part of your leadership team. Typical responsibilities include IT strategy and the roadmap, the project portfolio and budget, managing internal teams and outside vendors, preparing decisions for the executive team and the board, and coaching your IT and data leads. If the position is vacant, I step in as interim CIO until it’s filled. Where it helps, I also roll up my sleeves, for example on prototypes or analyses.

How long does an engagement usually last?

It depends on the scope. Focused engagements such as a second opinion, a software evaluation or an AI prototype usually take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Fractional and interim roles typically run six to twelve months or longer. There’s no minimum commitment for individual projects, and with a block of hours or hourly billing, you can start with just a few hours.

Where are you based, and do you work remotely?

I usually work remotely from St. Gallen and Locarno, with clients across Switzerland and internationally, in German and English. For workshops, planning sessions or important meetings with your executive team, customers or partners, I’m happy to come on site whenever being there in person really adds value.

Do you work alone or with a team?

I work on my own. The hours I bill are hours I work myself, and you have the same point of contact from the first call to the final handoff. For specialized topics, I can draw on a broad network of experts and bring them in as needed.

When it comes to AI, I practice what I preach: from research, analysis and documentation to software development, I use AI wherever it makes sense, and I consistently automate whatever can be automated. That lets me, as one person, get far more done today than just a few years ago, and you get more for every hour you pay for. The time this frees up goes into the work that takes human experience: putting things in context, making decisions and working with your people. I personally review and stand behind every deliverable.

Why work with you instead of an agency or consulting firm?

With me, the person advising you is the person doing the work: no rotating junior teams and no overhead for sales and administration. As an entrepreneur, I focus on outcomes, not on selling consulting days, and that makes me flexible: you can also hand off individual tasks by the hour. I’m in it for the long term, but I deliberately don’t make you dependent on me: I document my work thoroughly and hand over all materials, so your team or other partners can pick it up and keep going at any time.

The trade-off: my capacity is limited, and I can’t take on large initiatives that need a full team at once on my own. For those, I bring in experts from my network, recommend the right partners and, if you like, manage them for you.

How much capacity do you have?

Because I work on my own, my capacity is limited and shared across several clients. I can almost always fit smaller assignments in at short notice. For larger engagements and projects, we agree on scope and start date together, something we can usually settle in the intro call.

How does your pricing work?

I bill hourly, based on actual time spent, and invoice monthly. My rates are in line with the market, and because I run a lean operation with very little administrative overhead, that’s reflected in what I charge. Out-of-pocket expenses are billed separately. For project engagements, we agree on a cost cap, and after the free intro call, you’ll receive a proposal.
